Voice Over IP Technologies and Implementations

Voice over IP has been implemented in several ways over the years with the use of both proprietary and open standards and protocols. These protocols include: H.323, IMS, SIP and RTP. One example of a proprietary voice over implementation would be the Skype network. There are three methods commonly used for connecting to over IP services. The first is through the use of a typical analog telephone adaptor that is used for connecting a regular telephone to an over IP provider. Here, the phone adaptor is connected between the IP network such as a broadband service to a regular telephone jack, thus providing traditional telephone service to all other jacks in the residence or business. This type of voice over serviced is fixed to a specific location and is generally offered by broadband providers such as cable and telephone companies as a means of receiving a flat rate telephone service through IP technology.

The second over IP method is the use of a dedicated voice over IP phone. These phones offer the same voice over service without the need for a computer. Instead, these phones connect directly to the IP network with the use of technologies such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. In order to connect to the regular phone network, service from a voice over IP provider is required.

The third method of using voice over IP is through what is known as a soft phone or an Internet or digital phone. This is a software application that can be installed on a computer allowing voice calling without the use of dedicated hardware. The advantage of using this method is the ability it provides you or your company to have a fixed phone number that can be easily moved from one location to another. This includes from country to country.
